OK, I've got the latest batch of photos online. Uncle Keith's visit, deer in the back yard, and cheesy grins from Dorothy.

Cat Nose Beeping

I just downloaded two weeks' worth of photos from the camera, and will be uploading some of them later today. For now, here's a movie of Dorothy beeping Cobalt's nose (the movie requires Quicktime 7 to view). He's surprisingly unphased by the ordeal.

Today on Kitty TV

This is what we saw outside our bedroom (and bathroom) window around 7:30am this morning:
(The views out some of these windows are referred to as "kitty TV" because of the views of the birds etc. in the yard. Not to be confused with the "kitty widescreen TV" - the floor-to-ceiling living room windows.)

The back yard is now completely empty, as is the area near the driveway. Pictures of the devastation will follow sometime in the next few days.

The Hat Movie

This weekend we got a video snippet (on the camera, not the camcorder) of Dorothy playing with her hat and a bowl. I've uploaded two versions. One uses an encoding version I've used before. The other uses the new H.264 encoding but you need to have Quicktime 7 (available for free) to see it. H.264 should allow me to put up larger, longer movies with less disk space, so I'd like to start using it. Please let me know if upgrading to Quicktime 7 present a problem for you!

I Spy...

"What is it?" you ask? It's part of my retina. I had an eye exam on Friday, and there's a cool new technology that lets them image the back of your eye without having to dilate your pupils. It's called an OptoMap, and it takes just a few seconds. It's not covered by insurance, but it's not too expensive.

Given that I have to worry about glaucoma (and that my only other retinal scan, done with pupil dilation, is still back in Massachusetts), I decided it was worth it to get a baseline image for future reference. And the doctor was kind enough to give me the images (originally almost 4 megapixels) on a CD to take home.

And yes, that bright part in the middle is the optic nerve, heading off to my brain.

Teddy Bear Fun

Once again Elizabeth was so good and grabbed a video snippet from the camcorder this evening, so that we could post it quickly, rather than 2 years from now (as would have happened if it were left to my responsibility). We now have a great 41 second movie of Dorothy giggling at some teddy bears (the movie file is ~4.5MB, and it's in MP-4 format). Enjoy!

Tings' Visit

Darryl and Cynthia visited us for a couple of days this week, and unsurprisingly, a few photos were taken. 42% of the ones online were taken by Cynthia. But she's a better photographer than I am, because her photos were only 37% of the raw photos (in other words, I take more photos with less success of "good" ones).

Yuppie Slums of Issaquah

I forgot to make this post a month ago, when I first took the picture.

Over in Issaquah, there's a large development of townhouses or some much, up above a large shopping area and a regional Boeing office building. The houses, are very densely packed and look all alike:
200503195192_thumb.jpg (click to see full image)

I need to get a better picture to give the full impact of what the development looks like. Now, I'm sure these houses sell for lots of money and are home to various professionals. But I couldn't imagine living in that dense maze of no-elbow-room housing. Which is why the name "Yuppie Slums of Issaquah" came to mind.

The small royalty we receive will go to Dorothy's education fund. You can see the cover art here (it's the same image we gave to Mary Chung).

Ring Out the Old Year

The last Dorothy photo album of 2004 is now online. Given our schedule over the next few weeks, there may not be any new albums posted until near the end of January.

For the year, we have roughly 4,800 photos of Dorothy (that number includes some of Elizabeth pre-delivery, and Dorothy's toys, an occasional cat, etc. and also includes some photos taken by grandparents). Online, we have over 1,500 (the gallery's count gets messed up when you have sub-albums, so I'm not sure I believe its count of 1,574). So, despite my trying to publish fewer photos online, we wound up staying pretty close to our never-changing average of 1 out of 3 photos making it online.

The Missing Week, and Xmas

I know it's scandalous, but there was an entire week (December 8th to the 15th) where no photos were taken of Dorothy. To make up for this horrible error (due in part because Tom was in Seattle looking for housing), we have extra photos from after the missing week, right up to Xmas eve.

And to keep from having too many photos in one album, we have a separate photo album solely for Dec. 25th - Dorothy's First Xmas.

Counting Photos

Yes, there are more than 1,200 photos online as of yesterday, but that's not what this post is about. I've been putting photos into a catalog program I use, creating a new catalog roughly every two months (so that any one catalog doesn't have too many). Last night I grabbed the total number of photos from each catalog and the start/end dates as well, and calculated the average number of photos taken per day of Dorothy since she was born (OK, technically since right before she was born, since we have a few hospital photos as well). The good news is that the average is trending downward, but it seems to be approaching a plateau (as much as a "plateau" can be read from a couple of data points). Here's the data:
Time period Number of photos per day
March-April 17.6
May-June 15.6
July-August 14.0
September-October 13.7

Playing at the Park on a Warm Day

While Elizabeth was off at dance practice and work, Dorothy and I went to the nearby park again. It was very warm - up near 70 degrees! I didn't bring my regular camera, so the cell-phone camera had to make do. Dorothy got to have fun on the slides, swings, and the see-saw, and didn't have to be bundled up with mittens either! And yes, that is a Halloween sweater she's wearing, with ghosts, bats and spiders all over.

How to Shoot the Moon

Some people were curious about how I took the photos of the moon during the eclipse. This post explains how.

I got the photos of the moon (more will be in the gallery this weekend!) by turning my camera to full manual and then cranking way down on the shutter speed and closing down the aperture (i.e., increasing the aperture up to f/8), and using a low ISO speed.

At "normal" settings, where the camera decides proper brightness, it wanted the exposure time to be up in the range of 5 or more seconds, an open aperture (i.e., down to ~f/4), and high ISO (200 or 400). This let me see the clouds around the moon, and some stars, but the moon was a white blob, and the exposure was long enough that the clouds were blurry due to their motion (note that all photos were taken with the camera mounted on a tripod, even if it was a flimsy plastic one).

For the full, non-eclipsed moon, I instead set the exposure time very short, in the range of 1/200 to 1/400 of a second, and the aperture was closed up at f/8, and an ISO of 80 or 100. In other words, exposure went down by a factor of 1,000 or more (maybe 4,000? - i.e., a full 10 to 12 f-stops)! This is necessary because the moon is reflecting sunlight. Your camera is tricked into thinking it needs high exposure because most of the field of view is black. But in order to capture details of the very bright moon, you really need a low exposure. With these new settings, the moon came out beautifully but the clouds were invisible (because they were too dim)!

For the eclipsed moon, I had to increase the exposure time, up into the range of 1/10 to 1/30 of a second, and I also opened the aperture down to ~f/6, because it was so much dimmer than the non-eclipsed moon.

Bath time!

Tom and Dorothy, and our friend Susan and her son Ian, all made a visit to Babies 'R' Us today. They picked up a winter coat for Dorothy (in glamorous leopard print faux fur - photos undoubtedly will be coming soon), and Tom also got her some new bath toys. We decided to try giving her a bath in the "big girl" bathtub. Since our bathroom configuration makes it a little difficult to sit next to the tub and reach her easily, I got in with her.

She loves the new toys and the bigger bathtub! She figured out right away how to move forward and backward by kicking her legs and bouncing up and down, and she had lots of fun grabbing the new toys. We (of course) took plenty of photos, and some video as well. More photos will be in the next set this weekend, but here's an "appetizer":

Sitting at the Restaurant

I forgot to post this picture last week. Friday September 3rd, after picking up Dorothy from daycare and Elizabeth from the train, we decided to go to Conrad's restaurant for dinner. We let Dorothy sit in the 'big kids' high chair, even though it was way bigger than her. I only had my cellphone camera with me, and it was dark in there, but you can probably make out what she looked like:
Yes, she looked cute. But she got tired after 10 minutes or so. In fact, she got cranky before we finished our meals, so we had to leave early. But we still enjoyed the evening.

Just Too Cute For Words

Dorothy is just too cute for words, so I went and uploaded some more pictures the other day. Even these 35 new pictures can't capture all of her cuteness. It makes one despair of even bothering to try. And yet, somehow, I toil on, taking pictures, so that the grandparents don't starve. :-)

Photos Galore

As I was uploading the newest batch of photos, covering almost two weeks' worth of picture-taking, I was struck by competing desires to, on the one hand, put up all the cute or interesting photos, and on the other hand keep things (relatively) small. Some people probably just want to see a couple of photos of Dorothy. But her grandparents want to see everything we've got, and then some. So I try to compromise.

For those who are keeping score at home, we currently have 672 pictures online in the gallery, almost all of which are of Dorothy. Offline, we have over 2,200 pictures total, taking up around 1.5GB of disk space. And she's barely four and a half months old!!

Photo count

As of today (June 22), including some photos taken by grandparents and some photos not of Dorothy (eg. ones of the cats, or random other stuff), we've taken roughly 1,900 photos since Elizabeth went into the hospital for delivery at the beginning of March. Yes, you read that right -- nineteen hundred photos. What can I say? Dorothy's such a cute baby! (Note that there are "only" 542 photos posted online.)

Tons of Photos!

I've just added a bunch of photos covering June 12-22. After having fewer photos in the previous two weeks, this past week-plus has had a ton of photos, which is why I'm uploading them before the weekend. Enjoy!

(For those who didn't notice, the last batch of photos was from two weeks instead of one week, because I was hoping to slow down the number of photos we take, and to only post some online every other week. We'll see if I can try doing it again next time.)

Photo gallery upgraded

FYI, I've upgraded the photo gallery to a new version of Gallery software. The new version also comes with "skins" which means I've changed the look of the gallery.

Oh, and the new version also has a "slideshow" on the main page which will present a slide show of some number (currently I've set it to 50) of photos selected at random from within all of the albums.

Dorothy was "helping" me to upload the latest batch of photos, covering two entire weeks.
